Why do you think what you do matters?
Brenda Brooks: On the topic of “mattering” nothing is certain. I doubt that I do something that truly matters every day. But I do write every day, so that would be my best shot. And even though a manuscript, when it takes root, is a ravenous thing, jealous of all your attentions, if I’m faithful enough to it perhaps it might lead to something that moves and lives for the reader. This is my way of hoping that what I do matters.
What are Books For?
Brenda Brooks: I have always found books very versatile. I once used stacks of old, rejected books to make a bookcase for my regular, active books, which made finding any books at all very confusing. I will admit to having propped open windows with books, and last year I killed a spider the size of a coaster with Martin Amis’ The War Against Cliche. But more importantly, a book spread out on my lap beneath my desk got me through Grade 9, twice, in the same way that Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory always gets me through Christmas.
