What’s the best decision you’ve ever made, and why?

Susan M. Toy: Quitting a job to begin my own promotion company was the best decision I’ve made. I had already been responsible for myself while living in the Caribbean, so I had no qualms about following my instinct and in knowing what needed to be done, to leave behind the security of a paycheque, and venture forth into unknown waters by developing a unique service for authors and publishers. I’ve always been a maverick in that respect, anyway, and was never too keen to take direction from anyone. I definitely believe this individualist spirit has helped me achieve my pursuit to publish my own writing while I learned more about the publishing business and also developed an extensive network system as I built my own business.

Susan M. Toy: Why do you think what you do matters?

I’m a writer. I know how difficult it is to not only write a book, but also to get it published. I identify with and understand the many authors who see their books finally published only to be quickly forgotten by their publishers and booksellers once the season ends, let alone never be discovered at all by the vast number of readers in the world. Through publishing my own novel, I’m exploring the many possibilities, and discovering some new ways, to promote all books – to connect those books and their authors to readers, and to breathe life into writing that should not be allowed to wither and die, because no one is willing to spend more time than necessary to promote last season’s books. Authors deserve so much more of our attention, because they’ve worked very hard indeed to write their book in the first place.
