What do you think readers would be most surprised to learn about you?

Sandy Day:I think after reading Chatterbox readers would be most surprised to find out that my next book is about World War One. I began writing poems about my grandmother and the research morphed into the history of my Great Uncle – a teenager who marched off to war and returned a shattered man. I’ve never given the First World War any more than a passing thought, and now the poem In Flanders Fields reduces me to tears. The more I uncover, the more I want to share, and I’ve learned to trust that what moves me to write will move the hearts of those who read it.

What’s the best decision you’ve ever made, and why?

Sandy Day: When I quit my day job my marriage fell apart and from there the world opened up for me. I didn’t know how I would pay the bills and some weeks I still don’t know, but I wouldn’t trade my freedom for anything. Working for a corporation robbed me of my time and energy. To write I need hours on end, especially in the morning, and the freedom to say what is inside me. There is a Turkish proverb that says, no matter how far you have gone on the wrong road, turn back. I believe it.
