Getting 2 Know Margaret Sweatman
Margaret Sweatman: I’m studying Jose Saramago’s Blindness, and also David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas. Very different novels, but extreme, in their own ways: the virtuoso passion (and a rather lovely vanity, showing off) of David Mitchell; Saramago’s profound vision (ha!), his masterful control of cadence, the depth of thinking — these are masterpieces for different reasons.
BCB: If you could do anything for anyone, what would you do?
Margaret Sweatman: Um, I’ve got two kidneys. I have this fear that something will happen to my children, and then I assuage the fear by this inventory: one extra kidney, a big liver, Type O blood, etc. Generally: If I could do anything for my loved ones it would be to give them everything (except my time, about which I’m selfish, so my method is good in that I give them the end of my time).
