Finding Maria by Jennifer HattWhere do you feel most comfortable, and why?

Jennifer Hatt: I am at ease anywhere that has the color blue. My office walls are a pale blue called Camelot. My sunroom has a blue blanket with little sheep on it. The porch of the home of a dear friend has blue bottles lining its window. I have hanging on my messenger bag a blue rose that folds out into a shopping bag; when I’m in a business meeting in one of those dour beige boardrooms I discreetly sit it somewhere in my line of sight.
.
What charms you?
.
Jennifer Hatt: Doing laundry. I kid you not. There is a huge jumbled smelly pile of assorted nondescript colors and shapes on the floor. Within a few hours, there are six neat piles (family of five plus towels for the bathroom) all folded, fresh smelling, and ready for new adventures. I love the whole process of sorting, stuffing the washer full, hearing the hum of the machine in the background, tugging free the wet clothes from the drum, and hanging them to dry. I line dry year round: outside while the warmth is there, on a line in my basement during the winter and rainy stretches. My imagination drifts to marvelous places with the smell of detergent, the feel of damp cloth, and the arrangement of colours and shapes on the line. Stepping back, there is definitive proof of the good that has been accomplished. It must be how a farmer feels when looking at a great harvest. I wouldn’t know: plants are wary of me, and for good reason.
