Photo of Jane CoverntonWhere do you feel most comfortable, and why?

I feel most comfortable walking in any weather around the woods in the park on the side of the mountain above my house, especially when I’m alone and I don’t meet anyone else. Why? Because I can think. The cedars and firs help me to be calm and clear. Things get sorted out. Lines of inquiry come to me. The walking on uneven, but smooth, forest paths has a rhythm like the rhythm of good writing. Time passes but I am able to be in the moment.

What’s the best book you’ve read lately, and why?

The best book I’ve read lately is Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking. Why? Joan Didion’s writing about the loss of her husband John Dunne is clear and poetic, extremely pleasurable to read. She tries to deal honestly with difficult and extreme emotions. She follows lines of inquiry intelligently. She draws a picture of a marriage that works, using just a few words and images, and shares her sorrow when it ends.
