Getting 2 Know Charmaine Hammond
Author of On Toby’s Terms
Why do you think what you do matters?
Charmaine Hammond: I think all people do things that matter, the kindness one extends, teaching someone something new, and so on. This makes our world richer. When I share our dog Toby’s story and see adults and children become inspired to do something different, make a change, or simply enjoy the story, I know it mattered.
What is your creative process?
Charmaine Hammond: I enjoy the opportunity to create, to think without limitation or boundaries, and mostly to get out of my head. Writing is a heart process for me, so it is freeing to get out of my head and write without expectation or judgment.
The process for me is simple, and sometimes messy. When the idea bursts, I write it down, anywhere. When that idea spurs others, I write those down. When my energy is high I look deeper at the ideas or creative thoughts. Mindmapping has been a powerful way of putting a structure to my creativity to ensure that I see completion or movement (instead of getting distracted by BSO’s… bright shiny objects).
