Journeys Outside and In by Eleanor Millard

Journeys Outside and InJourneys Outside and In by Eleanor Millard. Published by Eleanor Millard.

The term “Outside” is used in the North of Canada and in Alaska to describe any place south of 60 degrees latitude. As journeys “inside”, the issues of a White professional working and living with First Nations in the North and the emotional challenges of journeying with them is explored with passion and candour.

Eleanor Millard came to the Yukon in 1965 as a recent university graduate. In this collection, her memoirs take us on a journey from her summer job as a barmaid in the Occidental Hotel in Dawson City, to social worker, to Minister of Education in the Yukon Legislative Assembly, and to her work as an educator. We drive with her in the Red Monster to Mayo and Keno and fly beyond the Arctic Circle, surrounded by freight, and accompany her in small planes in Central America and the Caribbean.

Eleanor’s life journey is peopled with characters out of a Paul Bunyan story: Myrna and her axe, Dick North and Jack London’s cabin, and Lupin, her husky dog and faithful companion. Her adoption of a Gwitchin girl from Old Crow and her relationship with the girl’s grandmother is especially poignant.

We see a world stage illuminated through the lens of one woman’s life. We freeze with Eleanor in the Keewatin and sweat in Cuba and El Salvador. We travel with her as she returns from her journeys Outside to the land and the people that have a special place in her heart.

This collection will be valued by Northerners, historians, and anyone who loves a good yarn. It speaks intelligently and is thought-provoking about public policy, especially in the area of First Nations’ rights, about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and adult literacy.

This is a book reveals a socially committed life and conveys the quirks and the grandeur of the real North. It is a moving study of cross-cultural conflict and compassion.

Eleanor Millard is also the author of River Child, a collection of linked short stories based on her experience as a social worker in the Yukon which revolves around one family of mixed blood. It is an exploration of character, place, and identity.

  2. Love Eleanor’s journeys, in the yukon and out, in her life and work. I’d love to write to her if her email address is available. I had it once but my computer crashed and I lost it.
