4 poets Mother Tongue Press4 poets: Daniela Elza, Peter Morin, Al Rempel, Onjana Yawnghwe

The first of Mother Tongue Publishing’s new series titled New BC Poets, 4 poets highlights over a dozen new poems by emerging poets Daniela Elza from Vancouver, Peter Morin from Victoria, Al Rempel from Prince George & Onjana Yawnghwe from Burnaby.

4 poets also includes poetry drafts, interviews, author photographs, poetics and short biographies as well as translations of select poems into French, Thai, Bulgarian and First Nation Tahltan. All poets have appeared in Rocksalt, an Anthology of Contemporary BC Poetry, the first in 31 years, published last year by Mother Tongue Press.

The book also features eight drawings by poet Joe Rosenblatt of Qualicum Beach and the cover is a painting by Salt Spring artist Ian Thomas.

About the Poets:

Daniela Bouneva Elza is a doctoral student in Philosophy of Education at SFU. Her work appears in more than 30 publications, including The Capilano Review, CV2, Van Gogh’s Ear, Vallam, Rocksalt Anthology, A Verse Map of Vancouver, and Poetic Inquiry. Elza is currently compiling her first full-length manuscript. She lives with her husband and two children in Vancouver.

Peter Morin is an independent curator, writer, visual artist and was recently curator-in-residence at the Western Front. He is from the crow clan of the Tahltan Nation. Morin was assistant editor for Redwire Native Youth Media Society, working on Redwire and Red Directions magazine. As a visual and performance artist, Morin’s work looks deeply into de-colonizing through relationship building and speaking one indigenous language.

Al Rempel is currently an alternate teacher in Prince George, where he lives with his wife and daughter. His poems have been published in The Malahat Review, GRAIN, in the online journals Reflections on Water and stonestone, and anthologized in Rocksalt, Half in the Sun, Forestry Diversification Project, and Down in the Valley.

Onjana Yawnghwe was born in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and grew up in Vancouver, BC. A graduate of the University of British Columbia (MA), she is the co-founder Xerography, a little literary journal, and fish magic press, a micro press which produces fine, hand-made publications. She lives in Burnaby, BC.

I love 4 poets. I’ve been reading and re-reading the poems, which are wonderful for their freshness, wide range of form, and originality in content. ~ Lorrraine Gane, poet and writing instructor

4 POETS: SIMPLE TITLE AND SATISFYING POETRY Getting to know them on something akin to an intimate level is due to the innovative way that Mona Fertig, the publisher, presents their work. ~ Tanya Lester, Gulf Islands Driftwood

Reclaiming language, and the sacred white space between words, spoken and written. That seems to be the unifying thread that enlivens this remarkable collection of poetry by newcomers Daniela Elza, Peter Morin, Al Rempel, and Onjana Yawnghwe. These poets recognize the integral relationship between land and language, language and perception, perception and memory. Their work is a much-needed breath of fresh air in Canadian poetry. ~ Arthur Joyce, ABCBookworld.com
