Book Club Discussion Tips

Anything that generates conversation will provide a desirable path into a book club discussion, so open-ended questions are useful. One individual in your group may be interested in the psychology of characters. Another may focus on historical detail. Someone else may approach the book from a feminist perspective. Multiple interests and impressions only make a discussion group more enjoyable.

You might ask “What special knowledge or skills does the author bring to the story?” or “How have my skills or experiences  influenced my reading? To get the most out of your book club discussion:

  • Enjoy the diversity in your group.
  • Understand that agreement is unnecessary. Differing points of view will make discussion interesting and challenging.
  • Ask polite questions to clarify, but avoid confrontational questioning. “That’s something I never would have considered. What was it in the character that caused you to think that?” is a useful question. “I don’t agree. What makes you think that?” is confrontational.

General Questions to Start

  1. Did you learn anything in this book that surprised you?
  2. How did the story touch you on an emotional level?
  3. What is the most interesting aspect of the novel/book for you?
  4. What is your overall impression of the main character or narrator?
  5. Do you have strong feelings about any particular character, and if so, why?
  6. What was it in the overriding theme of the novel or book that interested you?
  7. In what way does the setting enrich the story?
  8. Which passages did you find particularly quotable or insightful?
